HEALTH EDUCATION

Eight Dimensions of Wellness

Wellness is comprised of eight interrelated and interdependent dimensions: physical, emotional, social, intellectual, occupational, environmental, financial, and spiritual. The concept of wellness involves a holistic approach to achieving your optimal desired lifestyle by finding harmony and balance between each of these dimensions. We will introduce participants to the 8 dimensions of wellness and provide strategies and resources to help incorporate these concepts into their daily life to not only survive, but thrive and flourish at Georgia Tech.

Alcohol

We will utilize live-polling and trivia to learn and corrects various myths held by college students regarding alcohol use and consequences. Participants will be able to identify alcohol norms and the role social norming plays among peer groups related to acceptable/unacceptable behavior.

Resilience

Resilience is the capacity to bounce back despite adversity. We will tap into skills rooted in emotional balance, learned optimism, and social connection to help build grit and allow participants to bounce back and prepare a toolkit to address adversity in their lives.

Sexual Health

Healthy sexuality is an important part of your overall health and wellness. Participants are introduced to different sexual health concepts including healthy relationships, consent, safer sex practices, contraceptive methods, and much more. We will actively engage with the material through a myth/fact trivia session and condom demonstrations are available upon request.

Sleep

Sleep is important to achieve optimal health and wellness. We will highlight the benefits that sleep has on the body, allow participants to learn the role of nutrition and physical activity, as well as tips on how participants can effectively manage their time to promote a quality night’s rest.

Self-care

We will explore the importance of practicing self-care as a strategy to promote holistic wellness. For some, self-care may be ensuring they get a good night’s rest. While for others, it may be exercising by taking a walk in their natural environment. It’s important to remember that self-care looks different for each person, but the goal is to listen to your body and find time to engage in activities that recharge, rejuvenate, and reset you daily to reduce the risk of burnout. By the end of this presentation, participants will learn skills on how to personalize and prioritize self-care within each of the eight dimensions of wellness.
